PROLOGUE
[ Throughout his career Sandman has proven that the human body can endure and inflict a great amount of pain. Being put through flaming tables, getting a face full of barbed wire, and taking countless chair shots to the head all make things worth while. Although Sandman is growing older by the day, his desire and passion for the industry remain running strong. As we speak, Sandman is on the verge of signing with International Championship Wrestling. There is no doubt within my mind that Sandman is ready to lay it all out on the line. He is out to show that we live in a world that has no limits and no boundaries. After all.. the saying goes that the sky is the limit. Sandman seeks to soar past those limits. Sandman has risen to the occasion to prove that the limits are limitless. He will step in while the others stand back as doubters. Only time will tell whether or not he succeeds, but he urges everyone to pay attention to the details. ]
SCENE ONE
The Sky Is The Limit
[The flickering of dying life in the ashes of the cigarette are extinguished as the Sandman puts out his cigarette with his powerful, yet small thumb. The cameras pan out from his powerful eyes as Sandman notices the camera's presence standing before him. Sandman glares up at the night sky taking it in. On this night, the stars fill and illuminate the sky. As he bathes in the star's beauty, he slowly moves his head down to look into the camera. When his eyes make contact with the camera, the Sandman quickly greets us with a warm smile. His eyes give off a slight sparkle on screen.]
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
When I come out here at night I can't help but think about that old saying, "The sky is the limit." [Sandman chuckles softly to himself. He isn't one to believe in those old sayings. He pauses for a moment before introducing his own life theories.] It never ceases to amaze me just how many people hold that saying to be true. Everyone and their mother stand by that saying, denying anything else to be true. Me, on the other hand, I can't stand it. It's not something I can live by. [With a look of disgust plastered across his face, Sandman nods his head to show his disapproval.] They only look at the sky and marvel at its beauty, but they never think beyond looking at it because they are told that it is our limit. The average human being sees the sky for what it is, a lid on top of the world that no one can go beyond. My proof being, we tell our kids generation after generation, and ones that we are teaching that they can do anything because "the sky is the limit". But is that so true? Or is that phase used to keep control of someone's dreams, destinies, and desires to a certain level of achievement, so they won't realize that there are no limits? It's questions like these that make me wonder how far we've come over the years. People like to think that we've evolved over the years, yet they are afraid to see things outside of the box. They force themselves to listen to everything they're told.
[He pauses for a moment to let the question sink in as he awaits a response that clearly isn't going to come anytime soon. Realizing this, the silence is broken. Sandman continues on with a distinguished tone in his voice. He takes this analogy one step further as he begins to break things down one piece at a time.]
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
And then we are faced with the choice, to be scared of seeing how far we really can go, or become like few brave men and explore beyond limitations. However, every once and a while, like the astronauts, there comes a few brave men and women who are courageous enough to prove to the world that the "sky" is not the limit, but that the limits are limitless. Every once and a while there comes somebody who want to go beyond what he or she was told he or she was limited to. Every once and a while, there emerges someone or a group of people who are simply amazing. [Sandman points to himself signifying that he's going to be the one that emerges to prove the saying doesn't hold to be true.] In other words, I am going to be one of those men to step beyond the boundaries that were set to hold us back. I am going to be the one to prove the sky isn't the limit, and further more I am going to prove there is "no limit". Throughout my career, I have displayed this, and it seems like people have forgotten what made me who I am. However, some people being brain washed with the sayings like "The sky is the limit", refuse to remember what they have seen. Just because I'm not in the light, they have forgotten who I am, and what I've done. Just look at the sky, at night, you can see ALL THE STARS. People gaze at the beauty of the night sky. People believe there is something beyond the sky that can be reached. However, when day comes, they forget about the stars they seen in the night, and don't see beyond the sky, even though the stars are still there, they fail to realize them. International Championship Wrestling uses the same cloaking mechanisms the day time uses to hide the stars. No matter amount of pain I got to cause or suffer, I am going to show the world what it is to be "limitless". I am going reawaken the icon and I am going to show the world how talented I really am. On that night, the ICW crowd in attendance will see one star shine brighter than ever before. I am going to take ICW to new limits. A limit of no limitations. A limit where all the potential of every star can shine in ICW. And I'm sure that I don't stand alone on this one. I'm sure that there are others in that locker room that feel the exact same way I do. There are those that are sick and tired of being told what to believe. It's time for the entire world to open their eyes and see the world for the first time. It's time for the world to see the world for what is really is. They need to see the true colors shine.
[Sandman pauses once more. This one lasts a little bit longer than the previous one. It's obvious that the Sandman wants a new horizon to set in ICW and he's willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that happens. This is a different side of the Sandman, one in which we have never seen from his before. His drinking days seem to be long gone, but the bitter taste still remains in his mouth. This is a changed man. One for the better.]
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
We are on the verge of a new era dawning in ICW. I ask those of you watching at home at what point will you stop? When is your breaking point? I'm not here to piss away the rest of my career because I'm here to do what I do best. I'm here to do what I love to do. You aren't going to see me calling it quits anytime soon. Quitting for me, well.. it just isn't an option. It's the last thing on my mind right about now. I look around and all I see is a bunch of wasted potential in this promotion. Guys that go around claiming to be the very best in this business but when that bell sounds and they step into that ring something just isn't right. There's just something that seems out of place. You see folks, there's a fine line between carrying yourself with dignity, loyalty, and respect. The guys here, half of them don't walk that line. Half of them look at it, disregard it, and find themselves in a lost state of mind. They find themselves feeling nothing, an empty mass. Me though, I serve a purpose. Everything I do, every action I take.. I take it because I'm here for a reason. I'm here to bring ICW Wrestling to where it rightfully belongs. I'm here to do all of you a favor. It's time the world realizes just how good this place can really be. A new era is just around the horizon. And while some may try to hide as it sets, I assure you, I will let nothing stand in my way. People have been pissing this away for far too long. It's time for ICW's moment of clarity. It's time to define what this promotion truly is. And as I stand here before you, I give you my word that I am going to do whatever it takes to make sure that happens. ICW has been known for providing some of the best sports entertainment in this world, but somewhere along the way throughout their triumph there's been a lingering problem. Somewhere along the way they lost their footing. ICW's been off of its track lately and I'm here to keep things in motion. I'm going to be the guy that brings ICW back to where it needs to be. It's time for ICW to finally reach its true potential. The truth is.. ICW needs someone to step up. ICW needs someone to guide them. Who better than me? I've gone through hell and back, I've shed tears and bled to build a promotion from the ground up. I spent a good part of my life bleeding for everything I believed in. I wanted to show the world that I could surpass any odds, that I could do anything I put my mind to. And now, I have a golden opportunity standing in front of me. I have an opportunity to sign with ICW. I have an opportunity to go to MSW and showcase what I have to offer. This type of opportunity only comes around once in a lifetime and I will give it my all. I will sweat, I will bleed, and I will do whatever it takes to make sure ICW gets back where it rightfully belongs. I look forward to working with you. Good night, ICW.
[This could finally be the moment where ICW goes beyond the boundaries and evolves into something much more than a wrestling promotion. At this point, it's obvious that this was a different side of the hardcore icon, one in which we had never seen from him. The cameras pan out revealing the Sandman's warm smile as we transition to the next scene.]
SCENE TWO
Flesh and Blood
[Our exact whereabouts at this time are currently unknown to us as the scene opens up. We are immediately given a visual of some barrels. These barrels are filled with papers and garbage. The stench of gasoline fills the air. We can hear the sound of a match being lit. At this time, the match is thrown into the barrel as a fire emerges. Sandman then walks into the scene from the right side of the screen. As he makes his entrance, he looks up into the cameras with a smug look on his face. Before getting things started, Sandman clears the built up mucus in the back of his throat.]
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
Blood, sweat, and tears. These are not just the liquids of the human body. Each one of them has their own meaning and serves their own purpose. They are a symbol of the determination involved. Every time I step foot into a ring, look to the mat, and see the stains of blood on the mat, I realize that I'm not the only one with a heart. I'm not the greatest to ever grace this ring, nor am I the greatest now. But it doesn't mean I can't become the greatest. I'm as much of a human as anyone else. Even though my body isn't what it used to be in my glory days, I realize that I am NOT unparalleled. I am merely flesh and blood, but there is more than just the physical aspect. The mind is far stronger than the body. This, I've realized, is what can make you or break you. The mind possesses the power to overcome fears, repair wounds, and most importantly, a strong mind is the backbone of super stardom. My mind was once weak. Clouded with thoughts of being the greatest at what I did, part of which was because of heavily drinking before my matches. Thoughts so strong, they put a choke hold on reality, leading to the illusion of being a god. If my life had strictly evolved around wrestling, there would be little complaining. What I do, and how I do it, is no different from any man who brings themselves to a ICW ring. I just thought that I meant more. No one knew what it was like to be swarmed by fans, to be hunted down for autographs, or to even be photographed for hours. It all played a huge role in to the alarming speed of the inflation of my ego. I was a commodity. Then I watched myself bleed at the hands of another man. I watched myself drag my name through the mud. Then I felt the stinging sensation of tears. I had never experienced anything like it. I'd never wish it on another soul. The free fall I took from the top felt like it was never ending; but the landing was much.. much worse. I've stood at the bottom before, but not so broken or crushed. I was at the first rung of the ladder again. But we fall only to teach us to pick ourselves back up again. I now realize my worth isn't supposed to be so material. I crossed a fine line and now I had to mend the ties that I had severed. Time was no longer on my side as these were the later years of my life. It was now or never for me. This was do or die. This was make it or break it. There were no false confidences and no illusions. I'd go with my skill and follow my heart. I wasn't a wrestling god, nor was I considered a king. I was a man. I am the Sandman, flesh and blood.
[The fire begins to take a turn for the worse as it slowly begins to grow larger. Blazing out of control, the fire begins to dance wildly. Inch by inch, foot by foot, the fire's trail begins to move across the ground. The fire picks up as it comes into contact with the littered trash that is scattered across the floor. Sandman looks at the surroundings and notices the inferno before him. There is no look of concern, no look of remorse on his face. He looks back up at the cameras and nods his head before continuing.]
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
While some of you may be concerned with my current predicament I assure you that I am not in harm's way. I have always been known as a risk taker. I have always been known to obscure the lines of reality. I've proven that there are no limits to the human body. Where others have broken before your very eyes, I have emerged triumphant. I cannot be broken down.. I cannot be tampered with. What you see before you at this very moment isn't a life or death situation. This isn't the last you'll see of me I can assure you of that. ICW.. There are a lot of questions that need to be answered. There are a lot of trials standing in front of not only myself but each and every one of you. At what point will you cave into the pressure? At what point will your body refuse to go any further? You have guys acting as if they are a God amongst men. Some are too blinded by their egos to realize just how fragile they really are. These guys.. these idiots.. they are just one of the many reasons I've decided to lace up the boots again. I'm sick and tired of hearing their constant nagging. It's time for someone to step up to the plate and play some ball. And the way I see it, it might as well be me. It might as well be someone who knows better than to go around laying claims. I'm not some false prodigy. Hell, I don't have the natural athleticism like most of these guys do today but I'm not stupid. I'm not going to make the same mistakes they have. They need to check their egos at the door before I personally throw them out on their ass. It's as simple as that. You want to make a name for yourself? It's not coming from my expense. I'm not here to give anyone any free rides. I'm here because I mean business. So the question of the day is.. which one of you is it going to be? Who is going to be the first one to prove my theory is wrong? It doesn't matter because one by one all of the pieces are going to fill into place much like a jigsaw puzzle.
[Sandman inches himself closer to the fire. He extends his arms outwards. His arm dangles above the flames. Sandman remains still as he glances back up at the camera.]
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
Now, I know how many of you are feeling right about now. You think that you have everything figured out. You think that since you've been signed by International Championship Wrestling that you've made it all worthwhile. You're thinking right about now that there is nothing that can stand in your way. It's thoughts like these that continue to pollute your minds. It corrupts you into thinking that you are something ungodly. The fact of the matter is-- it's quite foolish. I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say that they are the best in the world today. It never gets old. I can hear it ten thousand times more but at the end of the day it's just another false claim. The thing is, you can't suddenly make yourself better. You aren't born with the skills to succeed in a business like this. To succeed you have to play the cards right. You have to bust your tail off week in and week out. You have to bleed, you have to sweat, and sometimes you even have to cry to make it in this business. When I take a look around the roster in this promotion though, there's always a few rotten apples. You have guys that think that just because they are a second generation superstar that they are automatically put at the front of the line. Now the last time I checked you are supposed to earn that spot. You're supposed to do that by proving that you are the very best at what you do. You're supposed to prove that you belong here. And the more I think about it, the more it pisses me off. I've seen guys running around the back that don't deserve to be in a promotion like this. I spent years in ECW, a place that many of you hold close to your hearts. I was one of the guys that built ECW from the ground up. Every moment of my life, every bit of energy I had, and all of my blood was spilt in order to build the foundation. During that time, despite nobody thinking we'd make it, we prevailed. I've already earned my right to be in this business. I've done my time, I've done my work, and now's the time I get to prove that I'm willing to do it all over again. You see.. that's the difference between me and a lot of the guys that are in that locker room. They aren't willing to put in the extra effort. They like to slack of. They like to cut corners whenever the opportunity presents itself and it makes me sick! As far as most of them are concerned they haven't earned their stripes yet. If they want to earn their stripes than they're going to have to do it the old fashioned way. They're going to have to step into that ring, pour their hearts and soul out, and bleed for this business. They need to prove their worthiness because I assure you there will be a time and a place when ICW is no longer with us. There's always that day of infamy that arises. The question that I have for the guys in the back is, how do you want to be remembered? Do you want to be known as the guy that was handed everything every single step of the way? Or do you want to be known as the guy that bled, shed tears, and poured his soul into this industry? I'll leave that call to you but at the end of the day, I know who I am. I know what my standards are and I refuse to lower myself to your level. I'm here to earn my stripes again. I'm here to start from the bottom and work my way up the ladder once more.
[The blazing trail now completely surrounds the Sandman. Sandman acknowledges this and without hesitation doesn't move a muscle. He is staring death directly in the face exactly like he's told us to do. This scene fades to black as static begins to air on screen. We now transition to our third and final scene.]
SCENE THREE
One on One
[The scene opened inside of an undisclosed studio near International Championship Wrestling Headquarter's, and inside of the establishment was a large production team and staff governing a segment which was going to be pre-taped to be aired at the very beginning of next MSW event. This "segment" featured the returning phenomenon by the name of The Sandman, and Terri Runnels whom was conducting the homecoming interview for him. The hardcore icon was seated in the backstage area, making a brief conversation with the camera crew before he was directed to sit in the right chair on the decorated set. Sandman sat on the black leather chair, dressed rather casually in his torn blue jeans and bloodied shirt. Terri Runnels eventually sat into the seat across from the Sandman's after shaking his hand and greeting him, speaking to him a few minutes to get a little acquainted with him. Soon did the production team began shooting as filming for the interview had started.]
The Bombshell // Terri Runnels
Good evening ladies and gentlemen, this is Terri Runnels here, and tonight I have had the honor to conduct an exclusive interview with someone who is looking to be signed officially to International Championship Wrestling. In ECW, this individual took his first steps into with nothing but a mission at heart to be successful, and since then they've broken barrier's and achieved the impossible. I'm sure you all know who I am talking about .. the incredibly talented, Sandman! Welcome Sandman, and thank you for doing this interview with me tonight.
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
Thank you, thank you. It's a pleasure to be here.
The Bombshell // Terri Runnels
Oh my, I don't even know where to begin with you .. it's just been a while since I've seen you, and there's just so many questions. But before I begin, I wanted to welcome you to ICW and I truly hope to see you make another great and impactful run as you did in ECW.
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
Thanks Terri. I can guarantee you that this time around you will be seeing a completely different side of me. Back in my ECW days I was living paycheck to paycheck. I was trying to introduce the world to a different style of wrestling and for what it was, ECW was great. It had its moments but at the end of the day we couldn't hold things together. ECW closed its doors and ever since then I can't help but to think where we went wrong. A lot of things played a factor in its downfall. Now though, I've had time to think. I've had time to contemplate about what I want to offer to this business and over the last few months my passion for this business has never been clearer.
The Bombshell // Terri Runnels
Believe me when I say that that's the greatest news I've heard in awhile. Okay, now .. my first question for this evening is one that EVERYONE has been dying to know. Hundreds to thousands of fans have been mailing letters and sending email's to ICW offices asking this one question, where did you go? Why did you leave WWE's envision of ECW when it looked like things were just about to heat up?
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
Oh yeah, I was expecting this one to be the first. Let me just start off with answering this question by saying that I have a love like no other ECW, it's become the most exciting promotion I've ever been involved in. But before I ever came here I had certain obligation's to fulfill because I was being independently contracted to certain small-time promotions. Some of those obligation's were to travel overseas and wrestle a few matches in different country's, and I joined ECW in the middle of this contract I had.
The Bombshell // Terri Runnels
I see, it's kind of disappointing, but at least we all know that you didn't leave or take a break from wrestling, that's the better thing about it. So are you done with all your "obligations" with wrestling in other countries and what not?
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
Yes, I'm finished with it. And although I left ECW a little disappointed, I must say that I had a wonderful time experiencing the different level of competition that wrestler's in Japan and Mexico give. It was my first time going over there, and I enjoyed it, I definitely learned a lot .. and I even picked up a little Japanese heavyweight style, so my skills have been growing nonstop. I encourage any wrestler that's in the U.S who hasn't worked over in Japan to do so, it is one of the most rewarding period's of your career. I learned a lot from it, and now I'm a better wrestler because of my experiences there.
The Bombshell // Terri Runnels
It's great to hear that you did enjoy yourself, especially to hear that your skills have been improved more than before. It's been said that you were contacted by ICW management while you were overseas. Another question of mine that I wanted to ask you was if you watched ICW's product while you were away.
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
As a matter of fact, yes I have. I know I was overseas, but management called me every week to let me know what was going on, they sent me tapes of the events, everything. They made sure that I didn't forget about them while I was away, I don't think they wanted me to have any kind of distance from it. But you know what, I wouldn't have it any other way.
The Bombshell // Terri Runnels
That's good. So since you've been keeping your eye on ICW, what do you think of all the things that's been going as of late?
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
ICW has really blossomed as of late. That's not to say that it's perfect because there's always room for some improvements. There's a lot of talent in this promotion. You can look back over the past few months and they've had nothing but great show after great show. They've really been setting the bar high for this business and I can't wait to lace up my boots again.
The Bombshell // Terri Runnels
Now one question that everyone wants to know is if you plan on going into the MSW Championship chase?
[The Sandman stopped for a moment. He smiled after hearing that, chuckling a little bit before he nodded along with his response.]
The Hardcore Icon // The Sandman
Yes, definitely. Do you think I would actually come here and give up competing for the biggest title here? Edge has it right now and lately he's really been on top of his game. Night in and night out he's been proving that he's the best in the business today. Edge seems unbeatable right now. That's not to say the guy doesn't have flaws because let's face it, he is human. If there's anything wrong with the guy it's how he goes about handling business. He always likes to call himself the opportunist. The way I see it; he goes for the easy way out. Instead of doing things the rightful way he likes to cut corners. He likes to sail by with the least amount of effort possible. Honestly Terri, it down right pisses me off. I look at a guy like Edge and I can't help but think to myself, "What a waste." He can be a lot better than that. He can stand for more than that. Let's face it though, I know I'm not going to waltz in here and compete for the most prestige prize in the business. I've said it before Terri and I'll say it again, I'm here to earn my stripes again. I'm started from the bottom and working my way back up to the top. I don't care what it takes. This won't be the first time I'll have to do it and it sure as hell isn't going to be the last. I'll do whatever it takes to make sure that dream becomes a reality. Who knows, one day I might be competing for that title.
[Running out of time on the interview, Terri started to wrap things up.]
The Bombshell // Terri Runnels
Well Sandman, I'd like to thank you for taking your time out of your training to give all the viewers at home some more insight on why you've come to ICW. Thanks for your time.
[The scene faded to black as they finally cut from the segment finishing it all up, and the Sandman left the ICW staff applauding for another good heart-felt promo. Sandman nodded and shook hands with Terri Runnels, talking to her a bit about his return before the the scene really ended.]
